On Saturday April 16th, thirty students from different colleges and universities in Boston were welcome as full-members of the Catholic Church. In a beautiful ceremony at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, the students received the sacrament of confirmation from Cardinal Seán O’Malley, O.F.M. Cap.
This year three students from Emmanuel College were confirmed: Adrianna Durocher (2017), Cinthia Garcia (2018), and Jasmine Benitez (2017).
Cardinal O’Malley talked about the hopeful sign that it is to see young people becoming new members of the Catholic Church, the joy we all experience, and the anticipation to see them actively engaged in our Church.
These three students participated in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Program (RCIA) which Emmanuel College offers throughout the academic year. This program is open to all students from Colleges of the Fenway. The program includes teaching about the sacraments, Catholic doctrine, liturgy, ecumenical and interreligious dialogue, Catholic social teaching, Vatican II and more. In other words, students learn why Catholics do what we do. As part of the program students had the opportunity to visit a Synagogue and a Mosque and gained understanding in the interreligious dialogue the Catholic Church promotes today.
The program is run by Sister Bárbara Gutiérrez, SND and receives input from faculty and staff who participate as guest speakers, among them: Dr. Mary Hines, Dr. Jon Paul Sydnor, Dr. Laurie Johnston and Rev. John Spencer, S.J.
